Hackberry Relief Project, a project of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a Program of GTKYF Foundation Inc
THIS PROJECT SERVES ALL OF SOUTH WEST LOUISIANA
and those impacted by the 2020 Hurricane season. Specifically, Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta. Preference given to those who have no insurance, lack of resources, and have not had assistance by other groups.
“FEMA has turned us down. The Red Cross never showed up. And we never saw the Army Corps of Engineers. Its groups like yours (speaking of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a GTKYF Foundation Program) that actual came and did something.”
-a southwest Louisiana resident
These rural working class communities of south west Louisiana have been abandoned for the most part by our system and those charged to provided relief.
So, we here at Neighbors Helping Neighbors decided to get involved. A small group of us were here for several weeks back in September 2020 right after hurricane Laura. We lended a helping hand, and did all we could to provide some type on relief.
Since then, the agencies who should have taken the lead in restoring this communities have basically abandoned them.
That brings us to where we are at…
As part of our programs parent organizations commitment to Building strong inclusive, sustainable communities we developed this project. With it comes a long term desire to help build, create and develop a sustainable LOCAL community.
A project of this size requires more than just us. We need your help. Rebuilding an entire area is not a small task. After being here right after the storm and now. We see the issues and the continued need for assistance that has NOT materialized. Here we are less than one month from the start of the 2021 hurricane season, with one storm already off the coast of Brazil. This should not be happening where people are left to live in battered RVs, their vehicles, and even tents. What is wrong with this world? That we just sit by and let our fellow humans suffer? Turning a blind eye to the harm and dire issues that are continuing in these communities? With the businesses basically decimated, and the small enterprise being hardest hit, the long term economic impact is substantial.
Do You Live in South West Louisiana and NEED HELP?
We NEED your help to help these families rebuild!
Please be aware that it may take us up to 24 hours to respond to your inquiry.
Thank you for your understanding
